# How to Choose Who You Do This Work With in Miami

Nobody teaches you how to pick. So people pick by proximity, by insurance, or by whoever answers first, and then quit after two sessions. Here is a better way to decide.

![A couple sitting together on a couch during a session in a Miami office](/assets/session-couple-DOvXOasL.jpg)

With over 15 years of dedicated practice and more than 1,000 couples helped, I specialize exclusively in couples coaching. As one of Miami's most trusted relationship specialists, reviewed by clients on Google, Psychology Today, and the major directories, including [Three Best Rated in Miami](https://threebestrated.com/marriage-counselors-in-miami-fl), my entire practice is built around helping partners repair connection, resolve deep conflict, and rebuild lasting trust.

I don't do general life coaching, my practice is 100% focused on couples. 15+ years of experience, 1,000+ couples helped, reviewed across the major platforms. I help partners build stronger, healthier futures together. If you want the local logistics, the Kendall office and the rest, that is [relationship coaching in Miami](/relationship-counseling-in-miami). This page is about the decision itself.

Pick the route first. Everything else on this page depends on that one decision.

## First, decide which route you are on

Before you compare people, decide what kind of help you are buying, because they are genuinely different products and most couples never make the choice consciously.

The clinical route is licensed. It is trained to look backward, to take a history, to work with what happened to each of you before you met and how it is showing up now. It can diagnose and treat. It is the correct route when there is abuse, an active addiction, or an untreated mental health condition in the picture, and I refer people there without hesitation.

The coaching route is forward looking. It starts from what the two of you want to build and goes after what is blocking it. It does not diagnose anybody and it does not treat anything. It tends to be shorter, more directive and more practical. I go through the honest comparison, including where coaching loses, in [coaching and the clinical path](/marriage-therapy-vs-marriage-coaching).

Pick the lane first. Comparing a coach to a licensed clinician on price is like comparing a plumber to an electrician on price.

Which route are you actually on?

The clinical route

There is abuse, an active addiction, an untreated mental health condition, or a history that is still actively running one of your lives. Somebody needs to be able to diagnose and treat.

You want a licensed professional. Any coach who takes this on anyway is telling you something about their judgment.

The coaching route

Two people who can both change, who have drifted, who argue in circles, who have stopped talking or stopped touching, and who want a plan rather than a history.

You want a coach who does only this work. Faster, more directive, and no diagnosis attached to anyone's permanent record.

![A happy couple](/assets/loves-4329036_640-300x199-DoHZV1BU.jpg)

Generalists are fine for a lot of things. Marriage is not one of them.

## Take the specialist test

This is the single most useful filter and it takes four minutes.

Look at the person's list of what they work with. If marriage sits on a menu alongside 14 unrelated things, that is a generalist who added couples to the list. Marriage is not a disorder. It may drive you crazy, but it is not a condition anybody treats, and being useful to two people and the thing between them at the same time is a specific skill that does not come free with a general credential.

The second half of the test: ask what framework they use and see whether an actual answer comes back. Someone who does this all day has a method with a name and a shape and can describe it in 30 seconds. Someone who does this occasionally will tell you they meet people where they are, which is a lovely sentence that describes nothing.

The one question that sorts most of the field

What do you do in the first session, specifically? A specialist answers in detail, immediately, because they have done it 500 times and it is the same shape every time. Vagueness here is the most reliable signal you will get for free.

![A couple in their 30s sitting close together on a Miami balcony](/assets/miami-latin-couple-balcony-D6iM4qPZ.jpg)

You learn more in the first call than in the first month if you ask the right 3 questions.

## What the first call should tell you

Any professional worth booking will give you a free conversation before you pay for anything. Mine is 25 minutes and it is for first timers. Use it properly.

The purpose of that call is not to be sold. It is to find out three things: whether they understood what you described, whether they told you anything you did not already know, and whether they were willing to say this might not be for you. That third one matters most. Anyone who takes every couple who calls is running a volume business, and you will find that out in month three.

You should also come off that call knowing what the first session would actually go after. Not a philosophy. A target. If nobody can tell you what you would be working on, they have not listened.

Ask these on the first call

- What would we actually work on in the first session?

- How many sessions do couples usually do with you?

- What do you do when only one of us wants to be here?

- What would make you tell us you are not the right person?

- Have you handled infidelity before, and how do you handle it?

![A couple walking together along a palm lined Miami waterfront](/assets/miami-latin-couple-street-BpdwE28x.jpg)

Miami is a transient city. Ask how long the person has actually been practicing here.

## What is different about choosing in this city

A few things are genuinely local and worth factoring in.

Language. If the two of you fight in Spanish and reconcile in English, or one of you thinks in one and argues in the other, that matters more than people expect. The person you hire does not have to be bilingual, but they do have to understand that a sentence in a second language costs the speaker something, and that being asked to have the hardest conversation of your marriage in your weaker language is not neutral.

Family. In this city the extended family is often a live participant in the marriage rather than a distant relative. Somebody who treats in laws as background noise is going to miss half of what is happening in your house.

Geography and traffic. Do not underestimate this. A room 40 minutes away in the wrong direction at 6pm becomes a reason to cancel, and cancellation is how this work dies. Either pick something that fits the actual commute or do it by video and stop pretending the drive is free. I work from an office in Kendall, and I do video sessions in all 50 states and DC, and the video is not the lesser option.

![A happy couple](/assets/couple-1845334_640-300x200-Cr1i2F65.jpg)

Money is the part everybody avoids asking about until session 4. Ask on day 1.

## The money question, honestly

This is where a lot of couples make the decision and it is worth understanding what you are choosing.

Insurance generally does not cover work on a marriage, because marriage is not a diagnosable condition. To bill it, a licensed clinician usually has to diagnose one of you with something, and that diagnosis goes on a permanent medical record that can be requested later in circumstances you cannot predict today, including a custody matter. That is not a scare story, it is just how records work, and most people book without ever being told.

Paying directly is harder up front and cleaner afterward. It keeps the record private, and it produces something else I see constantly: couples who paid for the room out of their own money show up differently. I do not take insurance. I go through what sessions cost and how to think about the value in [investing in marriage coaching in Miami](/invest-in-marriage-coaching-in-miami).

What should make you walk

- Guarantees of any kind

Nobody can promise your marriage survives, and a success rate on a website is a number nobody audited. Anyone who gives you a guaranteed outcome is telling you they will say what closes the sale.

- Taking a case they should refer

If you describe abuse or an active addiction and the response is a booking link rather than a referral, that is the whole review. Walk.

- Picking a side

A professional who lines up with one of you against the other feels wonderful for one session and destroys the work. You are not hiring an ally, you are hiring a room.

- No reviews anywhere

When someone does this well, clients say so publicly. Look off the company website: the Google listing, wherever else they are listed. If nobody will go on the record after years of practice, that is a yellow flag worth noticing.

![An illustration of a human brain made of colored shapes](/assets/brain-5868033_640-300x169-Onn9qKmQ.jpg)

Insight feels like progress. Behavior between sessions is progress.

## Ask how long it takes before you commit

Different routes have very different shapes and almost nobody asks.

Some clinical models are designed to run weekly for a long stretch. Emotionally focused work in the Sue Johnson tradition, which is genuinely good work, commonly runs somewhere from 8 to 20 plus weekly sessions. That is a real commitment of money, calendar and babysitting, and it is worth knowing before you start rather than in month four.

My own structure is deliberately short. Most couples do a 90 minute session to get the whole picture on the table, then two follow ups over the next month, and a lot of them are done. Some stay longer. Neither shape is better in the abstract. What matters is that you know which one you signed up for.

How I would actually choose

Pick the lane. Rule out the generalists. Take the free call and see whether they told you one true thing you did not already know and whether they were willing to say no. Then pick the one you would be least embarrassed to be honest in front of. That last criterion is not soft. It is most of the outcome.

![A happy couple in Miami](/assets/woman-3187620_640-300x200-D4gJHh4D.jpg)

Most couples wait about 6 years. There is no prize for waiting.

## Talk it through

If you want to run me through that filter, that is exactly what the free call is for. [Book a free 25 minute call](/talk-to-marriage-coach). It is for first timers, it costs nothing, and if what you describe belongs with a licensed professional I will say so on that call and tell you what to look for instead. There is also a longer version of the choosing process, written for anyone anywhere, on [how to find the right person for couples work](/find-a-marriage-counselor-couples-therapy/).

![A happy couple](/assets/couple-5892661_1280-min-300x188-B8-f-n9d.jpg)

These are the questions people ask me on the phone before they book anything.

## Questions couples ask

### How do I know whether we need a coach or a licensed professional?

If there is abuse, an active addiction, or an untreated mental health condition anywhere in the picture, you want a licensed professional and any coach worth hiring will tell you that on the first call. If you are two people who can both change and who have drifted, argued in circles, or stopped talking, coaching is usually faster and more practical.

### Does insurance cover this in Miami?

Generally not for work on a marriage, because a marriage is not a diagnosable condition. Billing it usually requires diagnosing one partner with something, and that goes on a permanent medical record. I do not take insurance. It is worth understanding that trade before you choose on price.

### How many sessions should we expect?

Ask, before you book, and get a real answer. Some clinical models run weekly for months by design. My own structure is short: a 90 minute session to get everything on the table, then two follow ups over the next month, and many couples are finished there. Neither shape is wrong. Being surprised by it is.

### What if my spouse will not come with me?

Start alone. Plenty of people do. We work on your half of the pattern, which is the only half you control anyway. What I will not do is coach you into a strategy for managing your spouse, because that surfaces later as a betrayal of its own.
