[Home](/) 2. Conflict Resolution Practical guide # Conflict resolution _that actually holds._ Most couples don't have a conflict problem. They have a repeating conflict problem, the same fight, in different clothes, three times a month. Here's what changes it, and what won't. If you've been together for years, you and your partner already have a handful of arguments you can basically recite from memory. That's not a failure, it's every long-term couple on the planet. What matters is whether those repeating fights are getting closer to a resolution or further from one. ## Stop trying to win the argument The first move that actually changes anything is deciding, out loud, that you're no longer trying to win. Winning an argument with the person you sleep next to is a Pyrrhic victory: you get to be right and also alone. The goal is a shared understanding of what happened and what you're going to do next. ## Name the pattern, not the incident "You never listen to me" is an incident argument. "We have a pattern where I bring something up, you interpret it as criticism, and we both shut down for two days" is a pattern conversation. The first one gets you nowhere. The second one gives you something you can actually change together. The trick is that pattern conversations can only happen when neither of you is currently activated. Try them on Sunday morning over coffee, not Tuesday night after the third fight about screen time. ## Learn each other's true objection Underneath every recurring fight is a request one of you hasn't managed to make clearly. "You never come to bed at the same time as me" is usually a request for closeness. "You're always on your phone" is usually a request for attention. Fights where the request is actually named, kindly, directly, resolve. Fights where it isn't, don't. ## Rules that make hard conversations survivable - One topic per conversation. If a second one comes up, park it explicitly. - No history dredging. What happened in 2019 is not evidence for what's happening tonight. - Either partner can call a 20-minute pause. The person who called it is responsible for restarting the conversation. - No name-calling, no character assassinations. Ever. Full stop. - End every hard conversation with an agreement about what happens next, even if the agreement is "we'll come back to this Saturday." ## When the strategies aren't enough If you've read the books, tried the frameworks, and still find yourselves running the same argument on loop, the problem usually isn't the strategy. It's that the emotional connection underneath has thinned enough that no communication tool holds. That's what coaching is for.
