[Home](/) 2. Fix a Struggling Marriage Guide # How to fix a _struggling marriage._ A struggling marriage isn't fixed by a big grand gesture. It's fixed by a small handful of daily changes, made honestly, sustained past the point where it's uncomfortable. A marriage rarely breaks in one afternoon. It thins. Attention thins, touch thins, curiosity about each other thins. Nothing dramatic, just a slow drift over three or four years until you're both surprised to find yourselves this far apart. Fixing it doesn't require heroics. It requires honesty and a small number of daily reps. ## 1\. Say the actual truth to yourself first Before anything happens between the two of you, one of you has to stop pretending. Not to your partner, to yourself. "This is not working, and I have been part of why." That single admission is where every real recovery I've ever seen starts. ## 2\. Get one honest conversation on the calendar Not five. One. A conversation that isn't about the kids, the schedule, the money, or the in-laws. Ninety minutes, phones down, somewhere neither of you can walk out of easily. If you can't imagine what you'd talk about, that itself is the topic. ## 3\. Restore the boring rituals Every strong long-term couple I've worked with has a handful of small, boring rituals that hold the connection together. A real goodbye kiss in the morning. A two-minute check-in when someone walks in the door. A shared coffee before the kids are up. One walk a week with no phones. Rebuild them one at a time. Don't skip a week to "start bigger next week." ## 4\. Fix the sleep and the sex Nothing kills a marriage faster than two adults sleeping in different rooms, going to bed at different times, and using the kids as a shield to avoid intimacy. Get in the same room at roughly the same time. Everything else follows. ## 5\. Stop trying to fix your partner You cannot change your partner. You can invite them into a different pattern by changing your own half of it, reliably, without keeping score. Most spouses will eventually meet a genuine change halfway. The ones who don't are giving you important information. ## 6\. Get outside help before you're desperate Most couples wait until Stage 2 or Stage 3 to reach out. By then the work is possible but heavier. The cheapest, fastest work happens in Stage 1, when neither of you has broken anything that can't be walked back yet. A free 25-minute call costs nothing.
