# How to Make Couples Coaching _Actually Work_

The couples who get unstuck are not the ones with the deepest insights. They are the ones who show up and do a handful of specific, unglamorous things.

![A parent sitting in a bright room during a one on one coaching session](/assets/session-individual-CYel63bd.jpg)

Most people picture couples work as three to six months of a quiet professional digging through your childhood while the two of you sit stiff on opposite ends of a couch. That is what they are afraid of, and honestly that fear is why a lot of couples wait until it is almost too late to get help.

That is not how I run it, and it is not why couples get unstuck anyway. After years of doing this, I can tell you the couples who get results are not the ones with the fanciest coach or the deepest insights. They are the ones who show up and do a handful of specific, unglamorous things. I am a coach, not a therapist, and I do not diagnose or treat, so I am not going to hand you a label. I am going to hand you the work. Here it is, straight.

The five moves

1. Own your half of the mess

2. Set goals for yourself, not a wish list for your partner

3. Find the feeling under the feeling

4. Put your own oxygen mask on first

5. Take divorce off the table

## Own your half of the mess

You do not get to sit back and wait to be fixed, and you do not get to blame me for not fixing you. You both built this thing, and you are both going to have to rebuild it. Blaming your spouse feels great for about ten seconds, and then it quietly hands away all your power, because now the problem lives in someone you cannot control. The first real move in this whole process is taking your half. Not 90 percent, not 10 percent. Your half. Everything else gets easier once both people do that.

Where your power is

Blaming your spouse hands away all your power, because the problem now lives in someone you cannot control. Take your half.

## Set goals for yourself, not a wish list for your partner

The easiest question in the world is what is the one thing you wish your partner would change. Every person walks in with that list already loaded. The much harder question, and the one that actually matters, is what are your goals for yourself in this marriage. We cannot change other people. We can only change how we show up and how we treat them. So we take your list of complaints and turn each one into something you personally control. That is where your power actually is.

## Find the feeling under the feeling

It is never really about the dishes. Dishes in the sink are a symptom, usually of one person feeling like they carry the whole load alone. So I play a game with couples called So What. You say you are furious he is always on his phone. So what? Well, I feel invisible. So what? Because I need to feel wanted and I stopped saying that out loud a long time ago. Now we have something real and honest to work on, instead of a fight about a phone that neither of you actually cares about.

## Put your own oxygen mask on first

Every airplane teaches this and every parent ignores it. Put your own mask on before you help others. When couples come to me, the first thing I check is whether both of you actually have your priorities straight, and here is the uncomfortable part. The kids, the job, the gym, the side hustle, they do not come first. You do. Two adults running on empty cannot pour anything into each other, and you cannot coach your way around exhaustion. Take care of yourself, then each other, and you will be shocked how much is left over for the kids and everything else.

## Take divorce off the table

Threatening to leave is the most expensive sentence in a marriage. In the moment it feels like a way to finally get their attention, to make them chase you. What it actually does is teach your partner that trying is risky, so over time they try less. It turns into a quiet contest of who cares less, and that is a death spiral, because both people conclude that effort is pointless. Argue all you want. Be passionate, even loud, because under a real fight is two people who still care. Just keep both feet in. Every time the word divorce gets used as a weapon, it chips at the one commitment holding the whole thing up.

> Threatening to leave is the most expensive sentence in a marriage.

Matthew W. Hoelscher, PCC

## The real work happens between sessions

Most of the change does not happen in the room with me. It happens in the car on the way home, or at 10pm when one of you finally says the thing. The couples who go silent between sessions are the ones who keep coming back month after month with the identical fight. The couples who keep talking, who let themselves be a little vulnerable again, reach a point where they can keep the marriage healthy on their own. That is the entire goal. I am trying to work myself out of a job as fast as honestly possible, and [rebuilding how you talk to each other](/how-to-improve-communication-in-marriage) is the engine that gets you there.

![A couple talking quietly at home between coaching sessions](/assets/session-urgent-CrgADQN_.jpg)

Most of the change happens at home, not in the room.

## Use the 3 Stages as your map

What working looks like depends on where you actually are, and comparing your marriage to somebody else's is a trap. [Stage 1 is stupid arguments and constant fighting](/stage-1-stupid-arguments-constant-fighting), and it is the quickest to turn around because the connection is bruised, not broken. [Stage 2 is infidelity and betrayal](/stage-2-infidelity-betrayal), where the work is deliberately rebuilding trust brick by brick and moving at the pace of the hurt partner. Knowing your stage tells you what to expect and stops you from judging your slow, painful Stage 2 against a friend's easy Stage 1.

The three stages

1. [Stupid Arguments and Constant Fighting](/stage-1-stupid-arguments-constant-fighting)

The quickest to turn around, because the connection is bruised, not broken.

2. [Infidelity and Betrayal](/stage-2-infidelity-betrayal)

Rebuilding trust brick by brick, at the pace of the hurt partner.

3. [Stay or Go](/stage-3-stay-or-go)

Knowing your stage tells you what to expect.

## How EC3 gets you there faster

EC3, Emotionally Connected Couples Coaching, is the method I built to do everything above faster than the traditional model does. It is direct, it is structured, and it is aimed squarely at getting two people who still love each other reconnected, not at keeping you in a chair indefinitely. If you are not sure whether you need this or the clinical route, [here is the honest comparison](/marriage-therapy-vs-marriage-coaching).

## Ready to do the work?

If your marriage is worth the effort, and most are, then the next step is simple. [Book a free consultation](/talk-to-marriage-coach) and we will find out together whether both of you are ready to actually do the work. No pressure, no diagnosis, just an honest conversation about where you are and what it would take to get unstuck.

## Questions couples ask

### How long does couples coaching take?

It depends on where you start and how much you do between sessions. I do not sell a fixed number of sessions or promise a timeline, because the couples who move fast are the ones doing the real work at home. A couple stuck in Stage 1 arguments usually turns a corner sooner than a couple rebuilding after betrayal.

### What if my partner will not come?

You can still start. You only control your own half of the marriage, and a lot shifts when one person stops blaming and starts showing up differently. Often the reluctant partner comes along later, once they see this is not a process built to blame them.

### Do we have to dig through our childhoods?

No. Coaching is forward focused. When something from the past is actively in the way we deal with it, but we do not camp there for months. The work is about what the two of you change now.

### Is coaching worth it if we fight all the time?

Constant fighting is very workable. That is Stage 1, the most fixable place a marriage can be, because there is still energy in the room. The couples who worry me more are the silent ones who have stopped bothering to fight at all.
