[Home](/) 2. Love, Marriage & Family Long read # Love, marriage and _family problems._ Nobody plans to grow apart. And yet a huge number of couples in year seven, eight, or nine of parenting look at each other and think, when did we stop being us? Here's how it usually happens, and what it takes to walk it back. The version of you that fell in love had time. Time to notice each other, time to be curious, time to be bored together on a Sunday and not feel like you were wasting it. The version of you that is a parent has almost no time, and the time you do have is spent on logistics. This is not a personal failing. It's the physics of family life. But it does produce a predictable set of problems that most couples don't see coming. ## The slide from love story to logistics Early in a relationship, conversations are about each other. Middle of marriage with kids, conversations are almost entirely about _the operation_, school pickups, doctors, budget, whose parents are visiting when. The operation is important, but if it's 99% of what the two of you talk about, connection quietly starves. ## When you are a parenting team but not a couple You can be a great parenting team and a terrible couple. It's actually common. Two people who coordinate calendars beautifully, divide labor efficiently, and don't touch each other on purpose anywhere but in front of the kids. The parenting team is functional. The couple is roommates. ## When one of you is carrying more Almost every couple I meet has one partner who has quietly been carrying more of the emotional and mental load of the family for years, usually without saying it out loud, sometimes without even realizing they're doing it. Resentment builds without any dramatic cause, and the partner doing less genuinely has no idea what changed. ## Extended family and in laws Two families of origin never quite blend without friction. Holidays, money, parenting styles, religion, boundaries with grandparents, these are the fights every couple has to have at some point. The couples that stay whole are the ones who present a united front to the outside, then work out the disagreement in private. ## The quiet drift in sex and intimacy Nobody in a busy household with young kids has the sex life they had at 27, and that's fine. What's not fine is going a year without any real intimacy, physical or emotional, and pretending everything's normal. The absence of touch and honesty is one of the most reliable predictors of a Stage 2 or Stage 3 crisis two years from now. ## What all these problems have in common They're all fixable. Every one of them. They're also all made worse by waiting. The difference between couples who rebuild and couples who split isn't the size of the problem, it's whether they addressed it while it was still small.
