# A Quick Marriage Self Check

This takes about 2 minutes. Answer for the marriage you had this month, not the marriage you remember and not the one you plan to have next year.

Most couples know something is off long before they can name it. They also tend to ask a question so large that it becomes useless: is our marriage good or bad.

This check asks about behaviors you can actually observe. It is not a diagnostic instrument, it does not measure mental health, and it cannot tell you whether to stay or leave. It can show you where the next honest conversation belongs.

## Take the self check

\1. We can discuss a hard subject without one of us leaving, yelling, or going silent.

\2. We know what the other person is carrying this week.

\3. We make at least one decision as a team instead of keeping score.

\4. Affection happens without it becoming a demand for anything else.

\5. We repair a bad exchange instead of pretending it did not happen.

\6. Each of us can name something we still enjoy about the other.

\7. We agree on what matters most for our family this year.

\8. Neither of us is secretly using separation as leverage in ordinary fights.

## How to use the score

The score is not a grade. A couple can score well and still have one serious issue. A couple can score poorly because a brutal month flattened every good habit they have. Look at the individual statements before you look at the total.

Choose the lowest statement and ask: what would usually look like this week. Keep the answer behavioral. We talk for 15 minutes after bedtime is useful. We become more connected is not a plan.

## If your scores are different

Good. You found the gap. Do not spend the next hour proving whose score is accurate. Ask each person for one recent example. Different scores often mean one person counts intention and the other counts impact.
