# Relationship Advice That Actually Fits This City

Most advice written for Miami couples is generic advice with a beach photo attached. These are the four pressures I hear about every week in a Kendall office, and what I actually tell people to do about them.

![Two chairs facing each other in a warm Kendall office at the start of a session](/assets/session-intro-BvUdJUS9.jpg)

There is a genre of article that takes ordinary relationship advice, adds a sentence about sunsets on Key Biscayne, and calls it advice for Miami couples. I have read a lot of them. None of them describe the marriages that come through my door.

This page is not the logistics page. If what you want is the office address, the rates, or what the free first call covers, that is all on [relationship coaching in Miami](/relationship-counseling-in-miami) and you should go there instead. This page is about the four pressures that show up in this city specifically, why they bend a marriage in a particular direction, and what I actually tell couples to do. My office is off SW 116th Terrace in Kendall, my wife is Argentine, my kids are being raised here. I am describing the water I live in too.

Miami couples are not failing at marriage. They are running it on a harder setting.

## Why generic advice keeps missing

Standard advice assumes a standard week. Two people, one household, a commute, a weekend, some extended family within a reasonable drive, one language at the dinner table. Change any of those variables and the advice stops fitting.

In this city several of them change at once. Housing costs eat a share of income that would be considered an emergency elsewhere. The family is either 8 blocks away and inside your marriage daily, or in another country and reachable only by a phone call that costs somebody an evening. A lot of houses run in two languages, which means arguments run in two languages, which means the exact same sentence can land three different ways. And the social calendar in this city has an appetite.

What I hear every week

- We are both working and still behind

Two incomes, both fully deployed, and the marriage is scheduled around the shifts that pay for the house. Nobody is lazy. There is simply nothing left over at 9pm.

- Her mother is in the house every day

Or nobody's mother is within 2,000 miles and there is not a single free hour of childcare available to either of you. Both versions strain a marriage, in opposite directions.

- We look completely fine

The photos are good, the family thinks you are the stable ones, and neither of you has said a true sentence to the other since March.

![A happy couple](/assets/miamiadv-2-COJMlooo.jpg)

Happy is easy in a good month. The tight month is the test.

## The squeeze, and what it does to a marriage

Money pressure in this city is not an abstraction, and I am not going to pretend a marriage coach can fix your mortgage. What I can tell you is what the pressure does to a couple, because that part is predictable.

It converts the marriage into an operation. Two people optimizing a schedule, splitting pickups, tracking who covered what. Operations are efficient and they are not intimate, and after a couple of years of running one, both people quietly conclude that the other person has become a colleague. Then somebody gets a bit of relief, a slower month, and finds there is nothing to come back to, because you spent 3 years building logistics and no time building anything else.

The thing to protect

When money is tight, the first thing couples cut is unstructured time together, because it looks like the only thing on the list that is not load bearing. It is the most load bearing item on the list.

The move is small and specific. One hour a week that costs nothing and has no agenda. A walk after the kids are down. Coffee on a Saturday before the day starts. It has to be recurring and it has to be protected from the operation, because the operation will take it back the first week you let it.

![A happy couple together](/assets/miamiadv-3-BcB9bMAw.jpg)

Family close by is a gift and a cost, often in the same afternoon.

## The family is either too close or too far

This is the most Miami thing on the page and it cuts both ways.

If your family is 10 minutes away and involved daily, you have help, and you have a marriage with a lot of people in it. The recurring failure I see is not the mother in law. It is a side door: one spouse can call their own parent and get a different answer than the couple would have given together. If a decision about your household can be made in a phone call you were not on, that is not an in law problem. That is a gap between the two of you that somebody else is walking through.

If your family is in Caracas or Bogota or Buenos Aires, you have a different problem. No backup, no free hours, and a standing emotional obligation on a phone or a video call that eats the exact evening slot a marriage needs. And there is usually an asymmetry, because one of you is more homesick than the other and neither of you has said so out loud in a while.

Family is close

What actually goes wrong

Family is far

What actually goes wrong

Decisions get made in phone calls the other spouse was not on.

There is no backup, so neither of you has been off duty since the first baby.

Help arrives with an opinion attached, and the opinion outranks the marriage.

One of you is quietly homesick and has decided that saying it would be ungrateful.

You have never had to decide anything alone, so you never learned how.

The evening call home takes the one hour you had, every night, and nobody has named it.

Holidays were decided in 2016 and have never been reopened.

Holidays mean a flight nobody can afford, and the guilt lands on the marriage.

Same fix in both cases: the two of you decide first, privately, and then whoever is related to the family delivers the answer. Never the in law. That one rule ends more of these than anything else I hand out.

![A picture about shared goals in a marriage](/assets/miamiadv-4-_xpmDIBb.jpg)

A shared goal has to be said out loud or it is not shared.

## Two languages, and the rules nobody wrote down

A lot of houses here run bilingual, and it does something to conflict that people do not expect. Most of us are more direct in one language and more careful in the other. So one spouse hears bluntness where the other one heard normal volume, or hears coldness where the other one was being polite.

Then there are the inherited rules. How loud you are allowed to be when you are upset. Whether you walk away from an argument or finish it. Whether money is discussed at the table or never. Nobody in either family ever wrote these down, so both of you believe your version is simply how people behave.

Say these out loud once, separately, then trade

- In my family, when someone was angry they got loud and then it was over.

- In my family, raising your voice meant something was actually wrong.

- In my house you never discussed money in front of the kids.

- In my house we finished the argument before anyone went to bed.

- When I switch languages mid fight it is not a tactic, it is where the words are.

- The thing I miss most about home is the part I never talk about here.

That exercise takes 20 minutes and I have watched it end fights that had been running for years, because it turns out nobody was being disrespectful. Two people were following two different rulebooks and each assumed the other was breaking the only one.

> Nobody was being disrespectful. Two people were following two different rulebooks and each assumed the other was breaking the only one.

Matthew W. Hoelscher, PCC

![A couple holding hands](/assets/miamiadv-5-h0GgTyyH.jpg)

Holding hands in public is not the same as being on the same page.

## The city rewards looking fine

This is the pressure nobody names. There is a strong local incentive to present well, and a marriage can coast for a very long time on presenting well. Good photos, good family reputation, the couple everyone assumes is solid. That reputation becomes an asset, and assets get protected.

Which is how you end up with two people who have not told each other the truth in a year, defending a version of the marriage instead of the marriage. I turn away couples whose actual goal is protecting the appearance, because I cannot help with that and I will not take money to try. The honest breakdown of who I take and who I refer out is on [who I actually work with](/types-of-clients-for-relationship-coaching).

The other thing appearance pressure does is delay the call. Couples here wait longer than couples elsewhere, and by the time somebody dials, the marriage has usually moved past the cheap stage. If you are already noticing the specific signs, [what infidelity looks like](/signs-of-infidelity-in-miami) is the more urgent read.

The honest test

Ask yourself which one you are protecting: the marriage, or the story about the marriage. Everything after that answer is easier.

## What I actually tell Miami couples

Four things, and they are unglamorous on purpose.

Protect one recurring hour that costs nothing, and treat it as fixed, because the operation will reclaim it otherwise. Decide about family privately and deliver it through the one who is related. Say your inherited rules out loud, both of you, once. And stop waiting for the year to slow down, because in this city the year does not slow down. August does not slow down, hurricane season does not slow down, and there is no natural January here where everything gets quiet enough for you to finally have the conversation.

The one thing I would add: the cooling of desire that most couples read as a local symptom of being busy is not local and it is not a symptom. It happens to everybody and it happens on schedule. Reading it as failure is what does the damage, and I went through the whole thing in [how desire fades naturally](/how-does-desire-fade-naturally). The framework I run all of this through is [the parent marriage](/what-is-a-parent-marriage).

## Talk it through

If any of that described your house, [book the free 25 minute call](/talk-to-marriage-coach). It is for people who have not worked with me before, it costs nothing, and the only thing I am trying to establish is whether I am the right person for what is actually happening. If I am not, I will tell you who is.

## Questions couples ask

### Is coaching couples in Miami actually different?

The patterns underneath are the same everywhere. The pressures on top of them are not. Housing costs that consume a serious share of two incomes, extended family that is either inside the marriage daily or 2,000 miles away, houses running in two languages with two unwritten rulebooks, and a strong local incentive to look fine. Those do not create new problems. They accelerate the ordinary ones and they delay the phone call.

### We do not live in Miami. Does any of this apply?

The family rule and the language rule apply anywhere. The money squeeze and the appearance pressure are sharper here but not unique. I work with couples by video across all 50 states and DC, so plenty of the people I coach have never been to Kendall.

### How do we handle in laws who are involved in everything?

Decide privately as a couple first, then have the spouse who is actually related to that family deliver the answer. Never the in law. Most of the damage in these situations does not come from the family at all. It comes from one spouse being left standing alone in a room while the other one stays quiet.

### We both work long hours. Where would we even find the time?

One hour a week, recurring, no agenda, costing nothing. That is the whole ask to start. Couples try to solve a time problem with a big gesture, a weekend away, and then nothing changes on the Tuesday after. The recurring hour beats the weekend every time, because a marriage is repaired in the ordinary week or it is not repaired.
