[Home](/) 2. [The 8 Stages](/help-me-save-my-marriage) 3. Stage 1 Stage 1 of 8 # Stage 1: You're fighting about _stupid things._ The dishwasher. The phone at dinner. Whose turn it is to handle bath time. If your fights lately feel small and constant, you're probably not fighting about what you think you're fighting about. Almost every couple I meet in Stage 1 says the same thing: _we're fighting all the time and I don't even know what we're fighting about anymore._ The surface content is real, the dishes actually are in the sink, the phone actually is out at dinner, but the temperature of the argument is way out of proportion to the thing itself. That temperature is the tell. When a fight about a fork feels like a fight about your whole marriage, it's because it kind of is. What's underneath almost every Stage 1 fight is the same message, dressed up in a hundred different outfits: **I don't feel seen by you anymore.** ## What it actually looks like Stage 1 rarely announces itself. It's the slow drift. Couples don't wake up one Tuesday and decide to lose each other, they lose each other in ten thousand small ways over three or four years and only notice once the fighting gets loud enough to break through. Some of the usual signatures: - The same argument on loop, sometimes twice a week, with slightly different props each time. - One partner shutting down completely mid-conversation while the other one gets louder. - Long stretches of "we're fine" that break as soon as one small thing goes wrong. - Kid-logistics eating the entire conversational bandwidth for months at a time. - A quiet resentment that flares over things you'd have shrugged off in year two. ## Why it escalates When we don't feel seen, we don't usually say _I don't feel seen._We do the opposite, we get sharp, or shut down, or start scoring the chore chart. Both moves are attempts to get a reaction from a partner who's stopped noticing us. Both moves also produce the exact reaction we didn't want: more distance. Add exhaustion, add small kids, add a job one or both of you are drowning in, and the pattern hardens. Fights get shorter and more efficient. You each learn your partner's worst lines by heart. The script writes itself. Left alone, Stage 1 doesn't stay Stage 1. When emotional connection goes dry long enough, someone eventually gets that need met somewhere else. That's how Stage 1 becomes Stage 2, quietly, without either of you meaning it. ## What changes it Stage 1 is the most fixable of the eight stages. Not because the pain is fake, it isn't, but because the pattern is still surface. The two of you still like each other underneath. Nobody's crossed a line yet that can't be walked back. The work in Stage 1 is unglamorous. It's learning to name what's actually underneath the fight in the moment it's happening. It's rebuilding the small, boring daily habits, the two-minute check-in, the phone put down at dinner, the goodbye kiss that means something, that quietly held the marriage together before life got this loud. In the three-session process I use with most couples, Stage 1 usually starts to shift in the first session. Not because we did anything magic, because for the first time in months, both of you had to answer an honest question in front of each other, and the person across from you actually listened. ## If this is where you are Book a free 25-minute call.
