[Home](/) 2. [The 8 Stages](/help-me-save-my-marriage) 3. Stage 3 Stage 3 of 8 # Stage 3: Deciding whether to _stay or go._ You've stopped fighting because you've stopped trying. One of you has already thought seriously about leaving. Stage 3 coaching is about making a clear-eyed decision, not drifting for another two years and waking up in the same place. Stage 3 is the quietest of the eight stages, and the most dangerous. There's not much yelling anymore. There's not much of anything anymore. You do the parenting shift, you handle the logistics, you're polite. And every so often one of you looks up and thinks, _is this the rest of my life?_ For most Stage 3 couples I meet, one partner has already run the math on divorce, the housing, the kids' schedule, the money, while the other partner still thinks things are "not great, but okay." That gap is not sustainable. It ends one of two ways: the partner who's been running the math walks out, usually in the next 12 to 24 months, or the two of you deliberately face the question together. ## What discernment coaching is Discernment is not couples work. Couples work assumes both people are rowing toward the same shore. In Stage 3, at least one of you isn't sure there's a shore worth rowing toward. Discernment coaching is a short, structured process, usually three to five sessions, with one goal: help both of you get to a clear, confident decision. There are only three real outcomes, and the point of the work is to arrive at one of them on purpose: - **Commit to the marriage,** knowing what needs to change, and start the actual work of rebuilding it. - **Decide to separate,** with a shared understanding of why and a plan for doing it well, especially where kids are involved. - **Stay in the current status quo,** but with both eyes open, no more pretending it's fine. ## Why this is worth doing Here's the part people don't want to hear: divorce doesn't solve the underlying skill gap. Whatever pattern got you here, avoidance, poor conflict skills, an inability to name what you need, doesn't stay behind in the paperwork. It shows up in the next relationship too. And the next one. Doing discernment properly gives you one of two things. Either you rebuild what you have, and you know why. Or you leave, and you leave clean, able to look your kids in the eye ten years from now and say, _we tried everything we could._ Both are better than the third option, which is drifting for another two years in a marriage nobody chose. ## What to expect In a Stage 3 process I'll ask both of you difficult questions, privately and together. What are you actually asking of this marriage? What would have to be true for you to fully commit again? What's the honest version you haven't said out loud yet? And, for the partner who's further out, what would you need to see in the next 90 days to know it's worth trying? The pace is deliberately fast.
