[Home](/) 2. 10 Common Marriage Problems Field guide # 10 common problems every _long marriage faces._ Nothing on this list means something is wrong with you. It means you're in a long marriage. What matters is what you do about them before they compound. I've done this work with hundreds of couples now. The specifics change wildly, jobs, cities, family shapes, but the same ten problems show up over and over. Here they are, plainly. 1. Emotional drift You know the operation of each other's life but not the interior. It happens to almost every couple by year six or seven. It's fixable, but only if you name it. 2. The mental-load imbalance One of you is quietly running the family's operating system in your head, and the other one has genuinely no idea. It curdles into resentment before either of you sees it coming. 3. Kid logistics eating every conversation If 90% of your conversations are pickups, activities, and school emails, connection dries out. The fix is boring: protect a few adult-only conversations a week. 4. Sleep and phones killing intimacy Different bedtimes, phones in bed, streaming until one of you falls asleep. It's one of the most reliable predictors of drift I see. 5. The 'we don't fight' problem Sometimes not fighting means you've resolved things. Often it means you've stopped bothering. The absence of conflict isn't the same as connection. 6. Old wounds that never fully healed The thing from 2019 that keeps showing up in 2026. It's not that you're holding a grudge, it's that the repair conversation didn't fully happen the first time. 7. In-law and extended-family friction Every couple has to work out where the marriage ends and the family of origin begins. The ones that stay whole present a united front outside and work out the disagreement inside. 8. Money as a proxy fight Almost no money fight is actually about the money. It's usually about trust, control, or the imbalance of who's carrying what. 9. The 'we've become roommates' realization You notice you haven't laughed together in months. You notice you don't touch anymore. Roommate mode is a symptom of connection thinning below the threshold that keeps it self-sustaining. 10. One partner further out the door than the other One of you has quietly been checking out for a while; the other one still thinks things are 'not great, but okay.'
