# My Miami Office, and How to Choose Where to Do This Work

A hurricane took the roof off and I rebuilt the whole thing. Here is what the room is actually like, why the room turns out to matter, and when a screen is the better call anyway.

![A warm Miami office with two chairs facing each other before a session](/assets/session-intro-BvUdJUS9.jpg)

For most of my career my philosophy was simple: serve the best coffee and nobody will care about the cup. Then it occurred to me that Starbucks serves good coffee and turned the cup into a status object, that every lawyer owns an expensive pen for signing contracts, and that human beings quite like a bit of flash alongside the substance. For years nobody asked me a single question about my office. I assumed that meant it did not matter.

I was wrong, and it took a hurricane to prove it. What follows is what the room is actually like, how it got that way, and the more useful question underneath all of it, which is how you decide where to do this work at all. Because the honest answer is that the room matters and it is not the deciding factor, and I would rather tell you that than sell you a chair.

## Why the room matters more than I thought

Here is what I know now that I did not know then. The environment tells a couple, within about 30 seconds, what kind of hour this is going to be. Before anybody says a word, the room has already made an argument about whether this is an examination or a conversation.

A waiting area with a clipboard and a rack of pamphlets says intake. A cold room with a desk between you says assessment. What I want the room to say is: you are about to have a difficult conversation with somebody who is on your side, and nothing about the next hour is being filed anywhere. Two people are going to say things out loud that they have never said to anybody, possibly including each other. The room is doing quiet work the entire time.

What I am actually trying to build

A room that is comfortable enough for you to be uncomfortable in. Those are not the same thing. Comfort is not the goal, it is the precondition. Nobody says the true version of anything while they are sitting in a chair that feels like a waiting room.

## What Hurricane Irma did to it

Before Irma I made do. A patch here, a replacement there, the way most of us handle anything that is not actively on fire. We resist change and we keep patching until something forces the issue.

Irma forced the issue. A section of the roof gave way without my knowledge, water came into one complete wall and about a third of the ceiling, and what I had was not a repair job. The office had to be gutted. So I made the decision that anybody in that position eventually makes: if I am taking it back to the studs anyway, I am going to build the room I actually want.

I put real time into the layout, the palette and the light, with one criterion the whole way through: does this help two people talk to each other. My contractor happened to be my neighbor and a serious fan of modern design, and his idea was a wood wall to keep the space grounded and warm rather than clinical. In May I replaced the windows with hurricane impact glass, having learned that particular lesson thoroughly. I added a proper door for privacy and to keep background noise out of sessions, because a couple who can hear the corridor will not tell you anything worth hearing. I redid the bathroom, since dignity is part of comfort and nobody relaxes in a room they are embarrassed to use. In August the custom furniture arrived, Manhattan style, and after years of mismatched pieces I finally had a room that looked like somebody had planned it.

So I have the office I wanted. The only problem now is that our house is nowhere near as nice, and my wife has opinions about that which I am not qualified to coach.

![The Kendall office, a small modern room with leather couches](/assets/Matthew-Hoelscher-Blog-1-300x263-Db9t5tmN.jpg)

This is my room in Kendall. I built every part of it to answer one question: does this help 2 people talk.

## What the room is actually like

Two chairs, close enough that you have to look at each other, and me. Warm light rather than overhead glare. A wood wall. Quiet enough that a whisper works, which matters more than you would guess, because a lot of the real sentences in my practice arrive quietly.

Just as important is what is not in there.

What is deliberately absent

- No clipboard and no intake battery on the first visit

- No desk between us, because a desk decides who is in charge

- No waiting area with a rack of pamphlets about grief

- No note taking while you are mid sentence

- No distractions in the room to pull your attention off each other

- No third chair for the spouse who did not come, which I have seen elsewhere and never understood

The first session is not history taking. I am not going to walk you through your childhoods for 3 weeks before we touch anything live. I want the thing that is happening this month, in your kitchen. Most couples give me the presenting version for about 15 minutes, and then somebody says the real one, usually by accident, usually in a sentence that begins with the words honestly I. The room is built for that sentence.

## Getting to Kendall

The main office is at 12755 SW 116th Terrace, Miami, FL 33186. That is Kendall. If you are coming from Pinecrest, Coral Gables, Doral, Brickell or heading north out of Homestead, you already know exactly what the Palmetto is going to do to you at 5:40 on a weekday, so build in the buffer you build in for everything else. The phone is 305.986.2905.

Do not let the drive decide anything

I have watched couples pick the wrong person because the parking was easier, and I have watched couples not start at all because the traffic looked like an argument they did not have in them that week. If Kendall is genuinely a problem, take video and stop thinking about it. The commute is not part of the treatment.

## Or a screen, which is not the lesser option

I want to be blunt about video because people ask about it apologetically, as though they were requesting the budget version. They are not. I work by video throughout Florida and in all 50 states and DC, and a large share of my practice runs that way now.

Better in the room

What the office gives you

Better on a screen

What video gives you

A first session, if you can manage it. Being in the same physical space changes what two people are willing to say out loud.

A session that actually happens on a Tuesday in March, with no sitter, no drive and no 90 minutes lost either side of the hour.

The longer 90 and 180 minute intensives, where the room does a lot of work in hour 2.

Consistency, which beats intensity for almost every couple with children under 5.

Couples who need to be somewhere neutral, because the house itself has become part of the argument.

Seeing you in the house where all of this is actually happening, which tells me things a nice room never will.

The couple who will treat the drive as a commitment ritual, and some genuinely do.

The partner who would never have agreed to be seen walking into an office. There are more of these than you would think.

Half my sessions are on a screen and I have no complaints about the results. What I do have is a strong opinion about the first one, which is that if you can reasonably get to Kendall for the first session, I will usually suggest it. Not a requirement. A suggestion, and I will drop it if it is a hassle.

## How to choose where to do this work

This is the part the original version of this page never covered, and it is the part that actually matters. The room is a nice room. It is not a reason to hire anybody.

How should you actually pick where to do this?

Pick by logistics

Nearest location, easiest parking, first available slot. It sounds shallow and it has one real virtue: the format you will actually keep showing up to beats the format you admire.

Fine for choosing between my Kendall room and video. A bad way to choose the person.

Pick by fit

Have the free 25 minute call, listen to how the person talks about your specific situation, and notice whether they told you anything you did not want to hear. Anybody who agrees with everything on a first call is selling.

This is the one that determines whether the work is any good. Sort the location afterward, and sort it around your week.

Here are 3 things I'd check about anybody, me included. One, will they tell you straight when you're not a fit for them. Two, are the prices right there on the site, so you never have to ask. Hunting for a number is its own kind of stress. Three, do they know the line between what they do and what a licensed professional does, and will they say it out loud. So here's mine. I'm an ICF PCC coach. I'm not a licensed clinician. I don't diagnose and I don't treat. I lay the whole comparison out in [marriage coaching compared with the clinical route](/marriage-therapy-vs-marriage-coaching).

If what you want next is the practical local page with the rates, who calls me and what the first call covers, that is [relationship coaching in Miami](/relationship-counseling-in-miami/). If you want to know how a session itself runs, hour by hour, that is [what couple coaching with me is actually like](/couple-coaching-in-miami). And if you are still working out whether you are even the kind of couple I take, start with [who I actually work with](/types-of-clients-for-relationship-coaching).

> A room that is comfortable enough for you to be uncomfortable in.

Matthew W. Hoelscher, PCC

## Talk it through

If you have read this far you are probably not shopping for interior design. [Book the free 25 minute call](/talk-to-marriage-coach) or call 305.986.2905. It is for first timers, it costs nothing, and the only thing I am trying to establish is whether I am the right person for what is actually going on in your house. If I am not, I will tell you who is, and you will not have spent a dollar finding that out.

## Questions couples ask

### Where exactly is the office?

12755 SW 116th Terrace, Miami, FL 33186, which is Kendall. I work by video with couples anywhere in Florida and across all 50 states and DC. The phone is 305.986.2905.

### Do we have to come to the office at all?

No. A large share of my practice runs on video and the results hold up. For parents of small children it is frequently the only format that survives contact with real life, because there is no sitter to arrange and no 90 minutes lost to the drive. If you are local and the first session is easy to get to, I will usually suggest doing that one in the room, but it is a suggestion.

### What is the room actually like?

Two chairs close enough that you have to look at each other, warm light, a wood wall, a proper door for privacy and quiet, and no clipboard. It was gutted and rebuilt after Hurricane Irma took part of the roof, which turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to it. Every choice in there was made against one question: does this help two people talk.

### Is a bigger or nicer office a sign of a better practitioner?

No, and I say that as somebody who spent a year building one. A nice room lowers the barrier to saying difficult things, which is genuinely useful, and that is the entire extent of its value. Choose the person on the first call, by whether they will tell you something you did not want to hear. Then pick whichever location or format you will actually keep turning up to.
