Talking to Each Other

# The Cold Drift and the Hot Fight: Two Faces of Resentment

Different styles, same root cause: unspoken, unresolved expectations.

Resentment tends to show up in one of two ways:

### The Cold Drift

You go numb. You stop talking about anything real. You avoid conflict but also avoid closeness. Sex feels like a chore (if it happens at all). You look fine on the outside, but inside you’re checked out.

### The Hot Fight

Everything sparks an argument. Small annoyances explode into big battles. You walk on eggshells, and yet you can’t seem to stop the cycle of conflict. You may still have passion in the bedroom, but outside of it, you’re disconnected.

## Case Study: Sarah and Mike

When Sarah and Mike got married, they promised each other they’d “always be a team.”

The first two years were great: lots of travel, date nights, and lazy Sunday mornings in bed.

Then they bought a house.

Mike took on extra shifts at work to cover the mortgage. Sarah started managing the household, paying bills, and taking care of repairs. They both assumed the other knew what they were sacrificing.

They didn’t talk about it, until the talking became arguing.

Sarah began to feel invisible. “He works all the time but doesn’t even notice I’m drowning,” she thought.

Mike began to feel unappreciated. “I’m killing myself at work for this family, and all she does is complain,” he told himself.

Neither voiced their needs directly. Instead, they communicated through sighs, sarcasm, and eventually, silence. By the time they came to me, they’d gone four months without physical intimacy, both describing feeling “alone in the same house”.

To avoid that pervasive loneliness, Mike began working longer shifts and burying himself at the gym, while Sarah threw herself into managing the kids, serving as a homeroom mom, and taking on extra projects.

The self fulfilling prophecy that neither person wanted to change kept pulling them apart. It was time for a change. Emotional disconnect is a silent killer, like heart disease. You will not see it or feel it coming on until it’s too late. This is how relationships that seem perfectly fine ended up shocking friends and family!

> Emotional disconnect is a silent killer, like heart disease.

Matthew W. Hoelscher, PCC

Before you end up in a surgical divorce, its time to do some small amounts of consistent communication to reconnect emotionally and start clearing out these artery-clogging resentments.

Their turning point came when I introduced Cardio Communication (https://parentmarriage.com/the-resentment-trap). Twenty minutes a day, no screens, no interruptions, just sharing what they were feeling, without problem-solving.

The first week was awkward. Sarah worried she’d “nag too much.” Mike didn’t know what to say without “getting in trouble.”

But by week three, something shifted. Mike admitted he missed Sarah and didn’t want to keep living like roommates. Sarah realized she hadn’t actually told Mike what would make her feel supported: she’d just expected him to know.

Within three months, their fights had dropped by 70%. They were laughing again. Touching more. And they described their marriage as “lighter.”

## Why This Matters Now

Resentment left unchecked becomes a wall.

Cardio Communication tears down that wall brick by brick.

Don’t wait until you’re in crisis to start.

Build the habit now, on good days, so it’s there for you on bad ones.

Your Homework

2. Schedule your first 20-minute Cardio Communication session this week.
3. Pick one small resentment to share, and listen to your partner share theirs.
