That is what makes this so disorienting. The man who would not pick a restaurant suddenly has a complete plan for a separate life. Do not confuse the completed plan with a sudden decision. Withdrawal often hides a long private argument. He has been presenting both sides to himself, answering both sides, and slowly becoming convinced that nothing can change. His wife enters the conversation at the verdict. ## This is a pattern, not a condition The label offers a neat explanation and removes the need to ask harder questions. What stopped being said. What did he decide her response would be before he heard it. What did she assume his silence meant. The pattern does not excuse secrecy. A person who privately exits while publicly maintaining the routine has denied the other person a real vote. That needs to be owned before trust can move. The label is not the answer. The pattern underneath it is where the useful work starts. ## He built a private case Every ordinary disappointment became evidence. The interrupted story, the canceled plan, the cold exchange after bedtime. None was decisive alone. Together they became a case he never presented. If you are him, bring the case into daylight without pretending the verdict is objective truth. If you are his spouse, do not answer every count like a lawyer. It is understandable and it usually confirms his belief that there is no room to think inside the marriage. Space without structure is abandonment. Structure without space is pressure. Agree on the next conversation, what is paused, and what still has to happen for the household and kids. ## Do not make an affair the only possible story Sometimes there is another person.
