8 Honest Questions

Am I Having an Emotional Affair? A Quick Self Check

This takes about 2 minutes. Answer for your own attention over the last month, not for what you meant or what you plan to do.

Wooden hearts and a small silver key on a wooden surface

Nearly every marriage eventually meets the gray area: a friendship, a colleague, someone whose messages you look forward to a bit more than you would want to explain out loud. It is rarely a decision anybody makes. It is a drift.

An emotional affair is not defined by what you did. It is defined by where your attention went and what you stopped bringing home. This check asks about that, not about anything physical. It is not a diagnostic instrument and it cannot tell you whether to stay or leave.

Take the self check

1. Someone outside my marriage hears my good news before my spouse does.
2. I tell someone else about my bad day properly, and my spouse gets the short version at dinner.
3. I look forward to one person's messages more than I would want to explain out loud.
4. If my spouse read the whole thread with that person, from the beginning, I would have some explaining to do.
5. I mention that person at home less than I used to.
6. I catch myself comparing my spouse to someone who has never had to negotiate bedtime or money with me.
7. Home feels like the place I brace for, and that conversation feels like the place I relax.
8. When my spouse asks about that person, I deflect, get defensive or change the subject.

How to read your score

The score is not a verdict. It counts how far the drift has gone, so lower is better. Look at the individual statements before you look at the total.

Then use the test people hate: would you be comfortable if your spouse read the whole thread, in order, from the beginning? Not one message. The whole thing. If the answer involves any explaining, you already know.

If you are worried about your spouse

Do not use this as evidence. When you sense something, you will be tempted to test: a comment, a look at the phone going face down, a small accusation floated to see what their face does. That turns the conversation into a trial.

Take the check yourself, then ask your spouse to take it on their own. And if you are the one being asked: you can be completely innocent of what you are being accused of and still be responsible for the distance that produced the accusation.

Where coaching fits

I am a coach, not a licensed therapist, and I do not diagnose or treat mental illness. Physical, sexual or mental abuse, an active addiction, or a mental health condition belongs with a licensed professional.

This is Stage 2 of the 8 Stages, and I deal with it constantly. If this check turned up a pattern, book the free 25 minute consultation. Bring the 2 statements you scored highest. That is enough to start a useful conversation.

Questions couples ask

Is it an emotional affair if nothing physical happened?

The physical line is not what defines it. The question is whether someone outside the marriage is getting the version of you your spouse used to get, while your spouse gets the leftovers.

Is this a diagnostic test?

No. It is a short conversation starter about where your attention goes. It does not prove or rule out an affair, and it does not identify any mental health condition.

Should my spouse take it too?

Yes, on their own. Then compare the statements, not the totals. The useful part is seeing which ones the 2 of you experience differently.

Does a high score mean the marriage is over?

No. An emotional affair is not the end of a marriage. It is very often the first genuinely honest conversation a couple has had in years.
