Marriage Counseling in Miami: Who Is the Best?

The honest answer is that there is no single best. There is the best fit for the two of you, and a few simple checks will help you find it.

Search marriage counseling Miami and you get pages of names, stars and badges. It is natural to want someone to just tell you which one is the best. The trouble is that best depends on what is happening in your house. The best person for one couple can be the wrong person for the next.

So this is not a ranking, and I will not name or rate anyone. It is the checklist I would hand a friend: what kind of help to look for, what to verify, what to ask, and how to tell whether the fit is right. I am a coach, not a licensed therapist, and I will tell you plainly where coaching fits and where it does not.

First, decide what kind of help you need

Before you compare people, decide what you are looking for. Licensed marriage counseling is clinical care. It can assess and treat mental health conditions, and it is the right place to start when there is abuse, an active addiction or a mental health crisis. Coaching is not therapy. It is for two safe people who want skills, a plan and someone to hold them to it. The full comparison is in What's the Difference Between Marriage Counseling and Coaching?

If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental health crisis or thoughts of suicide, call or text 988.

Check credentials and look up the license

In Florida, licensed marriage counseling usually comes from a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or a licensed psychologist. Registered interns also see couples under supervision while they work toward a license. You can check any of them on the Florida Department of Health license verification search in a couple of minutes.

Checking a Florida license

  1. Get the full name and the exact license

Ask for it directly. A licensed professional should be glad to share it.

  2. Search the Florida Department of Health license verification site

    Search by name and profession.

  3. Confirm the license type and that its status is current

Make sure it matches what the person told you.

If the person is a coach, there is no state license to look up, because Florida does not license coaching. Ask which credential they hold and who issued it, then check with that organization. Mine is the PCC credential from the International Coaching Federation, which is a coaching credential and not a license to provide therapy.

Ask about the approach

Two people with the same license can work in very different ways. Some spend a lot of time on history. Some are structured and practical. Some meet weekly for months, and some work in a short, concentrated block. None of that is wrong. You just want to know what you are signing up for before you start.

Questions worth asking on the first call

  • How do you usually work with couples, and what does the first month look like?

  • Do you see us together, separately, or both?

  • What would make you refer us to someone else?

  • How will we know it is working?

Listen for clear, specific answers. Someone who does this work every day can describe it in a minute.

Fit, the part no list can rank

Fit is the part no list can measure for you, and it may matter most. After the first call, ask yourselves a few honest questions. Did both of you feel heard, not just the one who talked more? Did the person stay neutral, or did one of you leave feeling recruited? Could you imagine saying the embarrassing true thing in that room?

Miami adds its own layer. Ask whether the person can work in the language you actually argue in. Ask how they handle extended family that is part of daily life, different faiths, or two cultures under one roof. In this city those are not side issues. Often they are the marriage.

The best person for one couple can be the wrong person for the next.

Format and logistics in Miami

The most skilled person in town cannot help if you never make it to the session. Be honest about the drive, the hour, and who is watching the kids.

Three practical checks

  • Format

In person, by video, or both. Video means no sitter and no rush hour on the Palmetto, and for many parents it is the format that actually happens.

  • Cost and payment

Ask the session fee and how many sessions couples usually need. Some licensed professionals accept insurance, depending on the plan. Coaching is self pay.

  • Timing

Ask about session length, evening openings and how soon you can start. A good fit you cannot see for months may not be the right fit for now.

Where coaching fits

If, after all of that, you want a coaching approach, mine is one option. I am an ICF Professional Certified Coach, not a licensed therapist, and I do not diagnose or treat anyone. I coach couples from an office in Kendall and by video in all 50 states and DC. You can read how coaching with me works, including what it costs, before you decide. If what you describe needs a licensed professional, I will tell you on the first call.

For more questions to ask and the warning signs worth walking away from, I keep a longer list on how to choose couples help in Miami.

Talk it through

If you want a second opinion on which kind of help fits, book a free consultation. The call is 25 minutes, free for first timers, and you will leave knowing your next step, even when that step is not coaching with me.

Questions couples ask

Who is the best marriage counselor in Miami?

There is no single best. The right person depends on what you are dealing with, how you want to work, and practical things like format, cost and timing. Check the license or credential, ask about the approach, and trust what you notice on the first call.

How do I check whether a marriage counselor is licensed in Florida?

Search the person's name on the Florida Department of Health license verification site and confirm the license type and its status. Licensed marriage counseling in Florida usually comes from an LMFT, LMHC, LCSW or licensed psychologist.

Is a marriage coach the same as a marriage counselor?

No. A marriage counselor is a licensed professional who can assess and treat mental health conditions. A coach is not licensed by the state and does not diagnose or treat. Coaching works on skills, habits and decisions. Both can be useful, for different problems.

Can we do this by video instead of driving across Miami?

Often, yes. Video removes the drive and the sitter, and that can decide whether sessions actually happen. If you are seeing a licensed professional by video, check that they hold a Florida license or a Florida telehealth registration. Both show up in the same state search.
